CareerQuest offers customized tutoring services delivered in-home or at any one of our five GTA locations. Tutoring can include test or exam preparation, homework assistance, or assistance in mastering specific skills. Our tutors are specialized in math, reading, writing, and spelling. They also have experience in tutoring students with learning disabilities, such as dyslexia or dyscalculia.

Math

Need a math tutor? CareerQuest’s math tutors are skilled at providing individualized tutoring to assist students struggling in any area of mathematics. Generally, individuals who experience difficulties in math, referred to as Dyscalculia, often have problems with sequencing and with memory. If your child is struggling with math, or has been diagnosed with a specific math disability, CareerQuest’s math tutors will introduce various fun and engaging learning strategies, including memory techniques specifically designed for recollection of math concepts. Often, challenges with math stem from an early learning experience that leads an individual to believe that he/she “can’t do math”. The goal of the instructor is to ensure that students not only learn the necessary skills but also gain the confidence to believe they can achieve their goals.

Students for whom math is a strength, and who desire enrichment in this subject area, our math tutors will provide fun, interactive exercises for continued development.

Writing

Writing challenges often lead to difficulty completing schoolwork, using writing in everyday situations, and in producing letters on paper. Difficulties in writing can stem from a visual-motor, or non-verbal learning challenge. Hand-eye coordination and memory for visual shapes and strokes of letters are factors affecting the development of handwriting skills. Writers with hand movement problems will often produce poorly spaced letters of varying size. They often write slowly and have an awkward pencil grip. Copying from a blackboard may be difficult. If your child has been told that he or she has a writing disability, our highly trained and skilled tutoring staff will identify the root cause and customize a program that will include reading strategies related to decoding, comprehension, and retention, and hands-on activities used to highlight the relationship between letters, words, and sounds. We may also work on language-based aspects of writing, recognition of letter clusters, and root words. Conversely, if your child possesses exceptional writing skills, there are many different strategies our tutors use to foster the growth of a budding writer, including rapid writing and mind mapping, both techniques for generating and developing ideas.

Reading

The vast majority of children diagnosed with learning difficulties have a primary problem with reading and related language skills. Such problems frequently impact an individual’s ability to learn and progress in school and in life. The good news is that most children with reading difficulties can be taught strategies for success in school. Our tutors will deliver engaging and interactive strategies for students who are challenged by reading, do not enjoy reading, or who have been diagnosed with a specific reading disability; these strategies focus on the three areas of Decoding, Comprehension, and Retention.

Our reading strategies not only assist those diagnosed with learning disabilities, but are also designed to help those students for whom reading is a relative weakness, or even for whom reading is an area of interest or strength. Fun, engaging activities will help to foster a lifelong love of reading.

It is highly recommended that any child receiving reading services also join CareerQuest’s Reader’s Theatre.

Spelling

If your child has challenges in spelling, this will ultimately hinder his or her progress in other areas of school, such as reading and writing. Developing basic strategies associated with phonics knowledge and letter-sound relationships through memory techniques and mnemonic devices can go a long way towards assisting a child with his or her challenges in spelling. If your child has difficulties in reading, it is likely that he or she also has difficulties in spelling. Challenges in spelling and reading, typically stem from difficulties with decoding. In addition, as individuals with reading difficulties usually do not tend to engage in reading activities, the limited exposure to words hinders spelling development. Therefore, our customized program will focus not only on decoding and phonetic awareness, but also include reading. This is accomplished through a combination of independent and interactive reading activities and can be combined with CareerQuest’s Reader’s Theatre.

Reader’s Theatre

Reader’s Theatre involves a dramatic reading from a text, usually with no memorization, no movement and a minimum of props. Students orally read texts as though reading parts in scripts. It is a very effective tool for creating interest and skill in reading. The emphasis is on oral expression of the part and offers less confident readers support from peers. In addition to increasing confidence and enjoyment of reading, it allows for broader exposure to words, which helps to improve spelling and writing skills. In addition, Reader’s Theatre has been found to be effective not only for language arts but for social studies as well. Performing stories based on another culture is one of the best ways for students to become interested in and familiar with that culture.

CareerQuest offers Readers Theatre to students of all ages and is provided in small group format.
